Sitting in the counselor’s office after months of brutal treatment, I felt exasperated by the loss of strength, energy, clarity, sanity. As soon as I finished one treatment, I entered another. Chemotherapy. Radiation. More and more surgeries.
The counselor slapped me across the face with the following words:
Resilience is finite.

The statement caught me off guard. I’ve always thought of resilience as endless. The spring always bounces back. The well always renews.
The counselor revealed that overused metal springs can wear right through. Some wells run dry. The bounce never returns. The place remains barren.
Thirty years of counseling experience, and he’d seen this again and again.
People burning through their resilience. Empty. Lifeless. Former shadows of themselves.
Sometimes the sparkle never returns to the iris.
I didn’t want to be among them.

Loved your comments on the Sabbath. I am learning that I need space when I’m not pushing anything forward.
Oh how I desire and seek this yoke, this partnership with my Savior…and have found honoring the sabbath, pursuing rest is vital in arriving there. Thank you for the reminder sweet friend! Hugs
Jesus contrasts his gentle and humble heart with the “wise and understanding” Jewish leaders who oppose him (Mt. 11:25,29). These ruling fathers are overbearing and condemn Jesus for what he says and does. They have accused Jesus of being a friend of tax collectors and sinners (11:19); and they will seek to destroy him for showing compassion on the sabbath to his hungry disciples and to a man in need of healing (12:1-14).
Jesus says he knows what his Father wants, quoting Hos. 6:6 (“I desire mercy, and not sacrifice”) (Mt. 12:7). Earlier, when Jesus ate with tax collectors and sinners, and was challenged by Pharisees, he also quoted Hos. 6:6 (see Mt. 9:10-13). Unlike the ruling fathers, Jesus knows the one true Father, and what he wants, what his yoke is.
You mention the Greek word chrestos, usually translated as “easy” in Mt. 11:30. But elsewhere in the N.T. it is often translated as kindness. For example, it is used in Lk. 6:35, where Jesus tells disciples to love their enemies, do good to them, and lend to them (when they need help) because God is “kind” to such ones; in Lk. 6:36 Jesus concludes, “be merciful as your Father is merciful.” Thus perhaps the best translation of Mt. 11:30 is “For my yoke is kindness, and mu burden is light.”
I love the idea of partnership with Jesus as we rest in him..when we am weary, abiding in Jesus does lighten the troubles, moves us with him beside us, in front of us, behinds us..your testimony makes this all come alive! Thank you!
Wow…love this insight, ‘…the harness still remains…agile, useful, tailor made, not overbearing…’ ! Such a great reminder to remain in the vine, bound to Jesus in a partnership that is meant to produce the fruit that will bring glory to God. No matter the circumstances, we can be sure that we are so wonderfully and deeply loved by our Father in heaven. I just have to keep taking my doubt and placing it in HIs lap.
You are such an encourager! Thank you!
So, true. The Sabbath is our spiritual recovery time. Great post. Blessings!
I’m in the middle of a busy season and this has been a good reminder to not be yoked to unhealthy schedules and impossible deadlines, but only Him. Thanks Margaret.
Thank you for sharing! I share with my clients the idea that life can become too much and that God gives you MORE than you can handle so that you lean on Him… So that you USE the yoke and partnership without fighting against it.
The idea that the burden of this world and following Jesus is not hard and not draining can cause many to be burnt up, carried away by the wind, and eaten up by the lies of the enemy. Thank you for your honesty and truth that reminds people that the Christian life is not “easy”, but we don’t do it alone. And THAT makes all the difference.
Margaret, there are days when I think that your counselor is right but then Jesus comes and reminds me that He is my resiliency and to rest in Him…remember that He is at work and its o.k. for me to need to rest in Him.
This was a wonderful post reminding me to keep entering His rest.
Praying that the sparkle in your iris will never ever dim but because He is the source of it, it will twinkle with His joy and peace. May you always be a bouncy woman 🙂
