This week I’m giving away THREE copies of Angie Smith‘s book, Mended: Pieces of a Life Made Whole. Angie has a way of making you feel like your chatting with your BFF as you read her work. The wife of Todd Smith (lead singer of hit Christian contemporary group Selah), Angie co-wrote the song “I Will Carry You” (found on Selah’s CD You Deliver Me) and authored a book by the same name. Angie, Todd, and their daughters live in Tennessee. I recently had the chance to ask Angie a few questions about her book:
Margaret: For readers who aren’t familiar with Mended, what is main idea?
Angie: It’s actually an interesting story. I had been writing a blog for a few years and had several entries that seemed to be the ones that resonated with readers, so we decided to compile them and turn them into a devotional-esque book. They were written in all different seasons of life, from great loss to simple everyday observations, all with what I hope will be a glimpse into the way the Lord is evident in our day-to-day lives. Some are funny, some are broken, and others were catalysts to some big steps in my own walk. It’s a collection of glimpses into an average life when you’re attentive to the divine grace around you.
Margaret: With all the Christian books on the market today, what motivated you to write Mended?
Angie: I really wanted the Lord to feel accessible to people reading, and I prayed it would speak to them about His intricate love in their lives. So many times what seems to be a minor detail or a subplot to our story is actually where we see Him the most-but we have to learn to look 🙂 I love when I hear Him whisper into the nooks and crannies of my parenting, my friendships, my fears etc. and I sense a newness about it all because I am keenly aware of Him there. This book is a collection of some of my favorite snapshots of my faith walk.
Margaret: What sparked the cover design for Mended and what is it trying to convey?
Angie: Ahhh, the pitcher 🙂 It sits on my mantel and sparks quite a few questions whenever my kids have friends over. Several have offered to save money and buy a nice new one, since it appears I took great pains to rescue this one 🙂 In actuality, I did. Several years ago I was in a hard place and feeling like my past had ruined what I had to offer. I started to consider all the ways I have messed up, disappointed, and rejected what was right and I was really affected by the regret that haunted me. One night, I felt like the Lord told me to take a pitcher and smash it on my front porch. Despite the fact that it was 10:00 at night, I did it. And then I felt Him tell me to put it back together again. For hours, I pieced it the best I could, all the while seeing these shards as symbols of my own brokenness. By the end of it, it looked exactly as it does on the cover, and as I stared at it, He whispered something so powerful that it changed the way I saw things. Instead of lamenting the missing pieces, He showed me the way the cracks allow Him to seep through; the way I am able to share His goodness, even in the wake of what I considered failure. It was a post I called “The Past & The Pitcher,” and the whole story is in Mended. But let’s just say when I saw it on the cover I cried for a good long while-it’s become a special piece to me 🙂

Margaret: What do you hope will happen in the reader’s heart and mind after they finish with the book?
Angie: My greatest hope is that the reader will start to see God in everyday moments, and that what feels unredeemed will become an offering instead of a hindrance to walking with the Lord. I also hope they laugh their heads off too 🙂 We need a good combination, don’t we? I hope they find it here, and that it inspires them to listen to Him, to revere Him, and to know that they’re loved by a trustworthy God. That feels pretty ambitious, doesn’t it? But I’d love to think He could use my words to speak His own 🙂

God used a shattered picture to speak to Angie. When is a moment in your life where God has used something–an item, conversation, opportunity–to speak into your life?

So thankful for how The Lord has expanded my community of faith this past year and all the new resources like Angie’s book that are available. God is SO good!
I love the heart of this, also love Angie’s bloom book club
I need to know “that what feels unredeemed will become an offering instead of a hindrance to walking with the Lord.” I would love to read this book.
Sounds like a beautiful redemption story.
would love to read it.
Myriam
The underlying premise/experience for this book is wonderful! I would love to have a copy to read and share with our ladies class at church. Thank you for sharing!
I love the picture of the Pitcher, both literally & figuratively as God has done/is doing a work in me. Would love to read this book.
I want to be able to break a vase if that is what God asks me to do. I was convicted by the fact that she broke it just because she felt God telling her to do it. Praying I can become that close to the Lord. Also, that available for him to use. Want to see him in everything I do.
I am so thinking of one of my co-works that I’d love to give this book to right now…
This sounds like a great book… I truly feel as if God uses my husband in this way to me. As a non believer he points out many things I believe God would and it causes me to reflect, pray, and change those things accordingly. I also see glimpses of God through his heart and some words. It seems interesting that in my heart that is God’s way of telling me to stay strong and keep fighting for my hubby because God is using this time in his life for something amazing. Excited to read this book!
I am sure every woman (and man) needs to read this. Sounds like a beautiful book, a stepping stone to grow closer to the Lord.
I have loved pitchers for years – the picture of pouring out for the nourishment of others really grabs my heart. I often give a pitcher to ministry friends as a tribute to how they’ve served. I would love to read Mended – perhaps it too will come to be an encouragement gift…
The title alone makes me want to open this book up and take it in! Thanks for sharing and giving…
Angie had such an amazing heart! I would love the chance to learn what God is saying through her in her new book! It sounds amazing!
Would love to win a copy of this book! Sounds like. Great and encouraging read!!
The Lord always uses my closest friends to speak truths I don’t even know I needed to hear.
Wow. This book sounds awesome. I’m currently trying to mend from some heartbreak in my own life. Throughout the process I have had to keep reminding myself that He can make this into something beautiful. That pitcher is a wonderful analogy of how He can work through our brokenness. Hope to read this book soon!
I would love to read this and be ae to share it.
I can relate the broken pitcher to an accident I had which left my body broken and hurting. God put those pieces back together again and healed my brokenness completely. During those weeks in the hospital, I had time to meditate, to talk with God, to listen as He spoke to me and to reflect on my life. I realized that this accident needed to happen to move me to a closer relationship with God and to look at my purpose for being. It was an experience that I am now very thankful for. The broken vase is mended and thriving! Thanks be to God. ♥
I would love to read this. Needing a little encouragement.
You asked when and through what medium God has spoken to us. I have been blessed to hear Him speak His tender words in times of abuse, chronic illness, and cancer — so many broken and missing places. But He also speaks through beauty, and loving friends, and those who speak and pray Scripture and truth into my life when I need it most. I would love to read about Angie’s experience. Best to you in your work, Margaret.
Inspiring story to read this Saturday morning. I think we all should have a pitcher to help remind us we can live through difficult times yet find strength through faith. I’ve heard the author share her past with Women of Faith and I am sure the book will be as powerful. I look forward to reading it.
I love Angie’s blog! I would love to read her book! Thanks for sharing!!!
So inspiring. The book sounds wonderful…so does the pitcher. Sometimes, the Lord whispers to us and when we obey immediately, we are refreshed. Bless you for putting the shards together.
Margaret, I love the cover and what others are saying about this book. I would love to have my own copy. Thank you so much for your posts.
As a mom, a widow, a new wife, director of community groups at our church & daughter of the King, I have ample opportunity to experience brokenness. “Mended” looks like an excellent resource to use for encouragement of myself & others. I look forward to reading & recommending!
Broken by other Christians … wanting to be mended! I would love to read this book!
I would love to read this book and also have a couple of friends I’d like to pass it along to.
Feeling like I need to be Mended.
I love Angie’s blog, and would love to win this book. I started reading it the day I found out I had miscarried our second baby and God used Audrey’s story to help me heal.
I’m so thankful that God loves and chooses to include me in His work. I have to be broken in order for Him to use me because it has to be ALL about Him.
Not familiar with Angie Smith’s writing but reading the story behind the cracked pitcher resonates with me. I do want to read this book.
Angie specifically, through her blog and journey with Audrey, walked me through a very difficult time in my life where I had a miscarriage and was so angry with God. Angie’s words and faith walk were an inspiration and the reason I started blogging myself….so grateful for other women of faith who have set an example for the lost!
Looks like a great book. Angie Smith is inspiring.
I love the broken pitcher on the front and the little bit of the story that I read. I would like to read the whole book now.
Would love the chance to read this and see the message that God has within the pages of this book.
Putting my life back together the way it was, mending me. I absolutely would love to read this book.
I was on vacation recently and while driving I saw a sign outside a small church in a rural farming town that had posted – ASAP. I did a double take because the first thought that comes to mind is the traditional meaning of “as soon as possible”. However, the church took this simple acronym and changed it to “always stop and pray”. This has caused a lot of reflection on my part and has impacted me to truly stop and pray in all moments of my day.
I am a completed Jew accepting Christ as God’s Son. It has been over 50 years ago I accepted
the Savior as my own, but have grown a bit complacent in my faith but still believe very strongly.
I’ve joined a Bible study at church, Margaret’s “Wonderstruck” and find myself falling in love
again with our Lord! I want to read all of the positive, wonderful books there are to increase my knowledge and satisfying my longing to be what He wants me to be… at 73!
Love the story about the pitcher! Would love to read this book
I have always enjoyed Selah, being a missionary kid as well. Thank you for the interview and the opportunity to read the book. I continue to enjoy Wonderstruck.
Love the trailer and Angie’s testimony. Would so love to read this book!
i love all her books and her blog. 🙂 she.s such a lovely person
I relate to the pitcher pictured ( 🙂 ) on the front cover. We can still be of service when we are cracked and somewhat broken.
Fabulous! Thanks so much! 🙂
Love Angie. Would love to win this book!!
It is so great the way the Lord speaks to us not only through our circumstances but also through other people. I can really identify with Angie Smith. I love the way the Lord spoke to her and now is speaking through her to others. I love the physical imagery of the broken but mended pitcher. It’s a great image of the way God uses our mistakes, regrets, and brokenness. Then, He shows up through all of it to bring about good for His purpose. Thanks for sharing this message.
i’ve been encouraged by these little bible studies that my daughters make up. they pick a verse and write a little story and email it to me. i like to learn about God through their eyes.
sounds like an interesting read.
would love to read, I love your blog as well as Angie’s.
Would love a copy of this book to read. =)
I love the idea of being mended. All too often I focus on feeling broken. God has spoken to me in so many, many ways and I’m thinking this book sounds like another way He will speak!
Wow. I am excited about this book and God using it to help me heal from my miscarriage.
Honestly, Margaret…I am in the midst of a deeply transitional area of my life where I am being mended in areas I didn’t know we’re broken still. I have been anxiously awaiting Angie’s book to be released, as my heart is passionate about addressing brokenness…and God’s healing of it.
Thank you, and Angie, for this opportunity.
God used the budding of a magnolia flower to speak truths to me. I watched it bud then mature in 3 days, and each stage I took pictures and learned specifics that He led me to find in my walk with Him during that time of my life. It was very beautiful, and wonderful to think that everywhere I look, God is.
This short interview/story touched me. Surprised me that it did, I guess the timing was just right. Especially because it was one of those echos I’ve heard in the last couple of days. I think I have been focused on the cracks instead of the light. Mending is a good place to listen to God.
Would love to win a copy! LOVE Angie Smith!
I would love to win a copy of this book if it’s not too late to enter! Sherrirmyers at hughes dot net
I would love to win…my life has had several traumatic events and I feel like I am being Mended by God ….
Thanks for this offer. Congratulations to whomever wins.
