God at the Hinge (Wednesdays with Walter)

Walter Brueggemann has a gift to bring hidden thoughts of the soul to light before God. Over the course of this fall, I wanted to share Walter Brueggemann with you every Wednesday from his book, Awed to Heaven, Rooted in Earth. I believe his prayers, his words, are laden with wonder. The wonder of honesty. The wonder of trust. The wonder of love. The wonder of beauty.

Read through the poem below silently. Recite it aloud. May this become our prayer today as we seek to see God in the midst of our every day. In the midst of our pain and heartache. In the midst of our joy and successes. In the midst of our courage and tenacity. In the midst of today. Right here. Right now:

You live at the hinge

You brood in the night in its fearfulness,
You dawn the day in its energy,
———You move at the edge of night
——————into the margin of day.
———You live at the hinge between fear and energy.
You take the feeble night and give us strong day,
———You take our fatigue and bestow courage,
———You take our drowsy reluctance and fashion full-blooded zeal.
What shall we say?
———You, only you, you
———You at the hinge—and then the day.
You—and then us,
———from you in faithfulness,
———us for the day,
———us in the freedom and courage and energy,
———and then back to you—in trust and gratitude.
Amen.

Father, may we be people marked by courage, zeal, trust, and gratitude today. Amen.

    Beautiful poem, Margaret and Walter. Every choice we make is a hinge that either points us toward God or away from Him.

    I was asked by my pastor this morning to come by the office during my lunch hour and video tape a short testimony that would be played during the message time on Sunday. The boldness and trust came in that I was not really prepared to do this, I didn’t go over my “notes” to prep, I didn’t analyze every last detail…but I knew that God wanted me to share. So, I trusted He would give me the words; thank goodness I had done my hair and make-up fairly nice this morning! ha ha! I’m sure I won’t win an Emmy for my presentation but the experience was about Him and words were His and I trust He’ll use it to His benefit. And as I was typing this I was reminded that just this morning in my quiet time he was prompting me to not worry about what man thinks…only what He thinks. SO, I guess He did the prep work!! Thank you Lord!

    The whole book of prayers is breathtaking. A must-read. It was hard to choose just a handful of his poems.

    I love thinking of God living at the hinge…that means when I come “unhinged” that is just giving Him more of an opportunity to shine through!
