For the last several months, I’ve noticed something bothering my dog’s mouth. Hershey has been licking more and rubbing his face into the ground. I decided to take him to the veterinarian. He assured me all was well with my dog.
But the behavior continued.
I went to another veterinarian for a second opinion. He assured me that Hershey was fine. When I asked about the odd behavior he told me that sometimes dogs just do funny things.
I wasn’t satisfied.
One of my closest friends just happens to be a dental hygienist. While over for dinner one night, I asked, “Is there any way that we could break into your dental office in the middle of the night and use the X-ray machine to see what’s really going on in my dog’s mouth?”
She laughed-knowing that I come up with the craziest capers.
“We could put on black hoodies and ski masks and everything!” I suggested.
“Margaret, we’ll do it, but you don’t need to break in-just come in during my lunch hour.”
A few days later, Hershey had his first human dental office visit. I held him in the dental chair. We took X-rays.
The dentist examined the images and gave us the verdict: Hershey had a cavity. I wasn’t a crazy dog owner. Wait. Maybe I was. But he did have a cavity!
We’re currently monitoring the cavity to see how it progresses and when an extraction is required.
