In love, God gives us a choice. We are not forced to love God, but given a profound and life-shaping opportunity to love.

Will we love God? Or will we choose to love lesser gods? Will we choose to pursue God? Or will we choose to pursue someone or something else?

Here are four things you must-read before you read Genesis 4-11:

  1. Meaning of names offer unique insights into Scripture. Abel means “vapor” or “breath,” alluding to his short lifespan. Enoch means “dedicated,” a reminder of his great faith. Noah means “comfort,” as God displays through Noah’s story that we too can have a reprieve from living under a curse.
  2. In Genesis 6:9, Noah is said to be a righteous man, blameless, who walked faithfully with God. “Blameless” can be translated as “whole” or “complete.”
  3. In the story of the Tower of Babel, (Genesis 11), there’s a play on words in the Hebrew expression “Let us make bricks” (nilb na) in verse 3 and “Let us confuse” (nab la) in verse 7, implying that though the people had one plan, God had another.
  4. The confusion unleashed at the tower of Babel is reversed at Pentecost where the Spirit empowers people to unite and understand one another. (Acts 2:5-9)
