It’s no secret that I struggle with e-ddiction.
Yep. I love being online. If I’m not careful, checking email, facebook, twitter etc. become the very first thing I do in the morning and the last thing I do at night.
Total disclosure: I’ve been known to hop online via my iPhone for a few seconds at a red stoplight and even sneak away to check email in the bathroom. Yep. E-ddicted.
Slowly, I’m getting a grip. Disciplining myself that the computer doesn’t get turned on until after coffee, a work out, a quiet time, and eggs. Saying adios to the laptop at the end of the day. Learning that my iPhone doesn’t have to go everywhere.
This weekend my loving husband took things to the next level. He turned off my incoming email for the weekend. He knew that these two days off were particularly precious to us–we’ll be working the next ten in a row because of scheduling–so he shut down the incoming email.
And it was……wonderful, peaceful, glorious, pleasant, fabulous.
Sometimes we need people to step into our lives and help us in areas where we are too weak to help ourselves. Now make no mistake, the Sunday School answer to the question, “Who saves you from yourself?”, is always Jesus. But often God places people in our lives to help us recognize areas of imbalance or overindulgence in a gracious, loving, I’m-for-you-way to help save us from ourselves.
Who is saving you from yourself? How are they doing it? What are some loving ways people are bringing out the very best of yourself?

Yeah, I have a tendency to check my email about 200 times a day. I keep expecting a huge flood of emails saying how brilliant my blog (travismamone.blogspot.com–had to sneak in a little plug!) is. And the funny thing is, I’m always ranting about how people are so attached to technology!
So yeah, great post, Margaret.
Oh, can I rave about Farmer Husband?
He built me a cabin.
A cabin with a loft and a fireplace.
He knew I was on deadline for a book with Zondervan this fall, so this summer he built me a cabin at the edge of our corn sea, a place to write with no internet distractions or domestic noise… a place just to listen to the rustling of the corn in the wind and the voice of the Spirit…
I sit out there and marvel what love can do.
But hmmmmm… maybe I should go google how to quiet the incoming mail for a day or two? Brilliant and kind, that giant man of yours, Margaret. You are blessed…
Grace and peace on your next traveling stint… may you find oases of quiet on the journey too…
All’s grace,
Ann Voskamp (who is going right back out to the cabin now š
Wahaha! I do the same.. checking twitter at a redlight and email in the bathroom!
My wife is the one who saves me.. she took my phone on holiday for two weeks..

Ann Voskamp,
Maybe I should get a cabin, ’cause every time I try to write I get distracted. Hey, it worked for Bon Iver!
Sometimes our lifesavers come in hard-to-digest packages. Someone recently confronted my “e-diction” in a harsh, judgmental tone. I was tempted to reject it like one would refuse the chemo that can potentially save from cancer. “Who is he to dictate how I spend my time?” But as I got quiet before God I heard His gentle voice–“He’s right. Receive it.” Humility allows us to grab onto the most abrasive arms and save ourselves. Thanks for the post, Margaret! And now, my coffee. š
