When God Beckons

Last night, Leif and I were finishing dinner after a much needed sabbath day of rest.We were going to watch a show on television (I’ll only say it’s new, it’s on ABC, an it’s hilarious–but no, not going to tell you which one) when I felt the desire to tuck away and simply be with God.

That may sound strange, but the impression, the desire was so strong, I couldn’t shake it.

I really wanted to watch TV and fulfill my promise to enjoy the show with my hubby, but I knew I could not. I shared with Leif that I wanted to read while he watched the show, and he looked at me quizzically, but said “okay.”

I tucked into bed and read some familiar chapters in Genesis.

I was gently reminded that what was put into motion in the beginning of time continues today and will continue until the end of time. We are part of a grander story–and the role we play all depends on our response to God.

When God Beckons

As I read, I peppered God with questions: what to read, how much to read, and what God wanted for this time. I didn’t hear a peep–only a sense that the Spirit was saying, I just want to be with you!

How do I keep forgetting that God doesn’t want something from me as much as God desires to be with me? Why do I hesitate to respond?

I’ve been talking to a friend who is also experiencing God beckoning. She has this sense that God wants her to connect with Him more. She’s reading the Bible, praying, and trying to get plugged into a community with greater intensity. I keep encouraging her knowing that God’s beckoning comes in seasons. If we miss the moment, there’s no telling how long it will be until the next one comes.

The picture I have in my mind (and forgive the simplicity) is the bright red Krispy Kreme Donuts sign illuminating, “Hot Now.” When you see those words lit up, you know the donuts are glazed, warm, and fresh.

Pull over.
Stop.
Buy.
Enjoy.

The message is clear.

Some days the message from God is just as clear.

Pull over.
Stop.
Take time.
Be with me.

May we not miss the moments when God beckons.
