The Words You Can’t Afford to Miss

Listening for God isn’t easy.

Maybe that’s one reason I write about the topic so often. I want to hear from God, really, I do. But so many other voices cloud my mind and emotions. The noise of busyness, distraction, and competing ideas make it hard to separate God’s voice from the countless other voices that fill the airwaves of our world.

For the past several weeks, we’ve been looking at the attributes of God by diving into The Organic God book and Bible study together. We’re looking at God as Natural, Pure, and Essential to all of our lives-and in the process discovering that as we pursue God it’s hard not fall in love with God all over again.

One of the facets of God’s character that stands out to me is that God is surprisingly talkative. God speaks in the most surprising moments. This reappears throughout the Scripture-one of the most notable is in Exodus 3.

After killing an Egyptian in a moment of anger, Moses runs to the wilderness for safety. One day, while shepherding his father-in-law’s sheep, Moses spots an unusual sight. Exodus 3:2 says,

“And the angel of the Lord appeared to him in a blazing fire from the midst of a bush; and he looked, and behold, the bush was burning with fire, yet the bush was not consumed.”

Moses decides to explore this flaming mystery. When the Lord sees that Moses turns aside to look, God calls out to him from the middle of the bush. God chooses to call out something unique to Moses he can’t mistake that the calling is intended for anyone else: “Moses, Moses!”

Moses replies, “Here I am.”

I love this story. Through a burning bush, our talkative God calls Moses to be the leader of the Jewish people and changes his life course. From this conversation, Moses returns to Egypt and rescues the Jewish people from a 400 yearlong history of slavery, shepherding them to a land God promised.

But sometimes I wonder how many burning bushes I pass by unaware.

How many times do I miss the moment?

My hunch is more than I ever imagined. But I don’t want to miss God. I don’t want to miss that which at first glance might appear everyday but on closer inspection is a divine moment-an opportunity to encounter God.

Let me ask you: How has our surprisingly talkative God revealed Himself to you?

What has God been saying to you?

May God’s voice echo in your Spirit. May God’s Word come alive in fresh ways. And may you not miss the moment the next time God wants reveal Himself to you.

    He speaks a lot through my children, friends, books, movies, TV shows, music, and of course His Word. But, a couple of years ago He spoke through my cat.

    I was in a busy time in my life and I was being asked to speak to our Wednesday night church service. Since “I” was busy, I kept putting off getting together what I was going to speak about. Well, the week before I was to speak, my cat who never gets in my lap without me calling her, takes an interest in my lap and would make me sit so she could sit.

    This went on for a couple of days when I finally heard, “Lorna – this is what I want from you. I don’t want to call you to sit in my lap, I want you to sit in my lap freely of your own will and I will comfort you.”

    Needless to say, I did manage to find someting to speak on at Church and to this day when my cat jumps in my lap, I’m reminded that maybe I’ve been a bit too busy and God wants me to sit in His lap so He can talk to me.

    We all had “heard” God’s voice in many ways, sometimes almost as though it were audible, and other times through repeated messages from speakers, friends, ministers, etc. within a short period of time. OK, I get it God! In my experience, when I’ve heard an audible voice, He immediately draws my mind to a special scripture passage to confirm that it is Him speaking. Those are aha moments that will be etched in my memory forever.

    God has spoken to me when I’ve needed Him the most. He printed large, capital letters of one word in my face – PRIDE. At first I couldn’t see what pride had to do with my reasoning, but He considered it pride so I dug further

    He will speak to us, especially in our lowest, humblest, most desperate moments. He wants to talk to us and thrives on His people talking to Him and listening to His voice.

    Just listened to a wonderful preacher, Albert Tate, talk about humility. He said that’s the best way to live then joked, “afterall Jesus said lo I am with you always.” great line. Hug to you!

    Lorna– I can’t tell you the amount of times God has spoken to me through Hershey. I remember one particular moment I realized this: Hershey (only 4-pounds) tries to jump up when I go to pick him up– He thinks he’s helping, but really its just getting in the way and sometimes makes it dangerous for him. How many times to I try to jump and do things on my own, instead of just letting the Father take care of me?

    I love how God can speak through anything– nature, his Word, even cute pups and fuzzy kittens. Thanks, Lorna!

    I believe when you meditate and pray to our heavenly Father he will answer definitely in scripture it happen to me in a time of trouble I kept reading the book of Acts Joy come in the morning all tears wete washed away

    I love it when God does that–when a passage or word from the Bible comes alive in such a way that it transforms us–our attitude, our perspective, our journey of faith and we find ourselves longing for even more of God.
