Have you ever been at the airport when they ask for volunteers? If you’re willing to give up your seat on the flight, they’ll give you a travel voucher and book you on a later flight. They’ll even cover your hotel and meals while you wait.
I listened to these offers. And then decided to take accept one. And another. And another.
Over the course of a year and a half, Leif and I collected a few. Then we began reading the rules. Up to three of the vouchers could be combined for a single ticket to anywhere the airline travels. We pulled out a map and a calendar and a bucket full of prayer. We scrolled through every possible option on the airline website.
How far could we go on three vouchers (for each of us)?
Approximately 8325.17 miles.
We’re leaving today for Sydney, Australia, for ten days.
But we had one voucher left over (for each of us). Back to the calculations.
Approximately 3609.2 miles.
We’re leaving in two and a half weeks for Reykjavik, Iceland, for four days.
Are those airline vouchers really worth volunteering for? Absolutely!
When you hear a customer service agent ask for volunteers, run (don’t walk!) to the counter.* Collecting those little slips of paper can open doors for the adventure of a lifetime and provide opportunities to see God moving and working in communities far away from your own. I’ll be Instagramming and Tweeting pics along the way, and my hunch is you’ll read about a few of our adventures in upcoming books.
The wonder of the abundant life awaits—not just at the airport but in the midst of everyday—don’t miss it! Be courageous.

*Every airline has different policies for their vouchers. Ask about details including value of voucher, ability to combine vouchers, and when the next available flight might be. It’s fine to be inconvenienced, but not stranded.
