How Well Do You Know the Bible? 5 Ways to Encourage Bible Literacy

A slew of crazy-pants friends and I read the entire Bible cover-to-cover in 40 days for Lent. (You can read about that adventure, here).

I shocked myself by what I didn’t remember or didn’t know about Scripture. I would come across well-worn passages and an unfamiliar verse would pop off the page. Well-read stories became fresh once again as I read them with a hungry heart.

How about you? How well do you know the Bible?

Take the Bible Trivia Quiz below.1

Grab a pen and paper to record your answers. Don’t worry—you don’t have to keep score. Take this short quiz and see how you do!

  1. Name the Ten Commandments.
  2. Name Jesus’ 12 disciples.
  3. Make a list of what happened during the 7 days of creation.
  4. How many books are there in the Bible? (Bonus points for knowing how many in the Old Testament and how many in the New).
  5. What’s the shortest chapter in the Bible? Longest chapter?

Whether you aced the quiz or have some studying to do, here are some statistics that may shock you:

Did you know?

  • Less than half of adults can name the four gospels.
  • Many Christians can’t name more than 3 disciples.
  • 60% of Americans can’t name five of the Ten Commandments.
  • 82% of Americans believe “God helps those who help themselves” is a Bible verse.2

As followers of Christ, the transformation to be more like Christ occurs through various ways—one of the main ways is saturating ourselves in Scripture. The more we steep in God’s Word, the more we’ll understand His ways, draw near to His heart, obey His commands, and discern His voice.

Here are 5 ways to encourage Bible literacy in your life:

  1. Hold a Game Night. Tune into (or record) The American Bible Challenge on GSN each week. Split your family and friends into teams to compete to answer the questions yourselves. Have fun learning new things about Scripture together.
  2. Join a Small Group. Not only do small groups encourage fellowship and growth of Christian community, they provide a place where you can ask questions, hold one another accountable, and dive into the Word. Pick up DVD-led small group curriculum at MargaretFeinberg.com. Click here to begin shopping.
  3. Read the Entire Bible. Pick a reading guide that works to you. Carve out time in your schedule every day to read your Bible—anywhere from ten minutes to an hour. Click here to download a 40-day reading guide.
  4. Watch The Bible. Mark Burnett’s The Bible aired this spring on The History Channel. You can purchase a copy of the DVDs from amazon, here.
  5. Download an audio Bible. Maybe reading isn’t your thing. Maybe you don’t know where to start when it comes to reading the Bible. Maybe you haven’t found a translation you love. Audio Bibles are quick, easy, and convenient. Commit to listening in the car each day. Click here to learn how to download the Bible on audio for free.
