This week, I’m giving away THREE copies of Stasi Eldredge‘s book, Becoming Myself: Embracing God’s Dream of You. Stasi is coauthor with her husband John of the bestselling classic, Captivating. A teacher and conference speaker, Stasi leads the women’s ministry of Ransomed Heart, a ministry devoted to helping people discover the heart of God. She is also the coauthor with John of Love and War. Her books have sold nearly 3 million copies. Stasi lives with her family in Colorado.
I recently had a chance to ask Stasi a few questions about her new book:
Margaret: For readers who aren’t familiar with Becoming Myself, what is the main idea?
Stasi: The main idea in Becoming Myself is found in 2 Corinthians 3:18: “And we all, who with unveiled faces reflect the Lord’s glory, are being transformed into his image with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit.” That is such good news! We are all on the journey of becoming our truest self but there are things we can do to actively participate with God in our transformation and hasten the process!
What were the biggest challenges or struggles during the writing process?
When I am inspired, writing flows easily. When I am not inspired – oy. Besides the discipline of making myself sit down and work when I’d rather be doing anything else, some of the biggest challenges in writing this book came in the editing. There is so much more I wanted to say that at times it feels I am merely skimming the surface of important subjects. Plus, I am not a woman of few words – so honing, clarifying, and deleting passages was tough.
What has been the greatest encouragement in your writing experience?
What encourages me deeply is hearing from women who tell me that I put into words that which they already knew and experienced but didn’t have the words to express themselves. And that reading what I have written helps them to believe that all the fabulous things God says about them in the Bible is true, encourages them to pursue Jesus and brings them healing and hope. There’s nothing better than that!
What do you hope will happen in the reader’s heart and mind after they finish Becoming Myself?
Great question! My hope is that after reading Becoming Myself women are infused with hope and fall more deeply in love with the God who made them. From the safe and healing place of being boundlessly loved, my prayer is that women embrace who they are and step boldly forward to offer their unique gifting and calling that the Body of Christ – and the world – so desperately needs!

So I might end up being the only man on this comment thread, but I hope that this book is one that I can use to empower a budding female leader in my church, who feels called to women’s ministry. She needs something to spur her on, and I feel like gifting her this book and encouraging her in the direction of getting these truths on our women to help the Lord heal them, might be the push she needs.
What I love is how God remakes us over and over again. Thank goodness I am not who I was 10 years ago. Sounds like an encouraging read.

Wow, wow, wow. I SO want to read this!! God has blessed me with certain gifts and traits, but sometimes it’s hard to embrace them all. I think sometimes I wish that God would have made me with different abilities, but its so neat to think that God put me in the location I am, with the people I’m with, and with the gifts I have- ALL FOR A PURPOSE! And that purpose being His glory!

I have been searching for what God has in plan for me and what gifts I hold that can be put to use. As I grow older and sort through the “junk” in my life I realize that my time here on earth needs to be spent as God wishes, not as I think he wishes….I too am on a journey to Becoming Myself.

Two years ago I had the privilege of attending a Captivating retreat in Colorado where God began the “process” of helping me lay down my dreams and embrace His! I am ever grateful that God used Ransomed Heart to help me on my journey in becoming who God has called me to be! Excited to read her new book!

Becoming Myself- Wow, as I listened to the podcast at RH Ministries, so moved by the words that go deep within, (come to me, healing) touching places I have buried. A form of protection, I guess. I find myself wanting to hear and read more.

I love sitting down with other women and just listening to their hearts and hearing about their life, struggles, achievements, etc…..when the spirit prompts i’ll encourage and love them but when He says “just listen” I am very good at doing so!!!

Good for you Shay! Sometimes that’s all I have to offer to The Lord. I will feel called to make a change that I just can’t. “Lord, please just do it in me.” Then He gets the glory, not me.
The Lord has blessed me with a big personality. But sometimes it doesn’t feel so much like a blessing. I’m still trying to get that all figured out.

I really want to become the woman God created me to be, yet I’ve struggled with self-worth issues and feeling like I’m uncertain of what my calling is for a long time now, and I really don’t feel like I have much purpose right now. God has given me a gift for empathy. I’m always trying to think what it’s like to be in the other person’s situation and how my words might be received.
I was invited to lead a workshop earlier this month about our spiritual gifts. It took a lot of strength and humility to be able to name my gifts, but it felt so important in order to serve as an example to the others in the workshop who didn’t feel like they had gifts or who felt embarrassed to name them. We shouldn’t be embarrassed about what God has given us. We should boldly proclaim them for His glory. He has given me the gift to write and teach so that I can share Him more fully with others, and I pray I can be faithful to that calling every single day.

Well, as long as I can remember….ok, high school…. I’ve been everybody’s best friend. The one they felt comfortable with enough to unload. Not that I had some great wisdom of the ages to impart, but I heard them. I really heard them. Never tried to fix anyone, didn’t feel even comfortable with much advice. Yet, for some reason, they came to me. Never understood it for a very, very long time. Didn’t want to be everyone’s best friend. So, I realized that listening is my gift. Just listening.We all need to be heard.

I have always loved John and Stasi’s ministry. I was blessed to experience her Captivating retreat a few years ago in Colorado and bringing her retreat to bless my home church in Maryland. I cannot express enough of what her words have done for my life, always at the exactly the right time of when I need them.
My God given gifts have been of hospitality and kindness and compassion. I love all things homebound and gifting others with comfort. However, I’m hurting terribly right now and wondering who I really am. I know God is at the helm, but I do need to press in.

I just had my 60th birthday … once thought that was old! Becoming myself has been a lifelong process and I suspect it will continue until I meet Jesus. I’m at (yet another) crossroad in my life and seeking God’s direction. Will this be the time I finally rely on Him (totally) or continue my way?
One trait or gift that I have been blessed with would be the gift of encouragement and te art of teaching. Wow, listening to the book trailer I felt like I was listening to myself – so much of the season change right now and feel as if it has been for such a long time. In fact, making some very intentional changes that God has been leading my family And I can’t wait to see how God is working this together. A copy of this book would be a blessing.
Staci’s “Captivating” was life-changing for me and for the others in my bible study group. I’d love to read “Becoming Myself!” God has been so good to help me become myself in recent years. As a counselor, I can see this new book being a great resource for my clients.
That’s exactly what I want, is to be what God’s Dream is for me to be. I want whatever His Will is for my life and I know that one of those dreams is for me to “Go and Make Disciples” so whenever I am given the opportunity to speak to someone about Christ, I take advantage of that moment because I don’t want to miss it knowing that God either lead that person to me or me to them. I am overwhelmed and humbled each time I am asked to go to a school and be there when there has been a crisis. Each time, I just throw up my hands, and say, “What, God, are you kidding? You know I have NOTHING to say to these people who are seriously hurting right now.” And He gently responds, “You are right, you have NOTHING to say…but I have all kinds of things to say, so just GO.” I still do not get it but am thankful for these opportunities in such horrific circumstances. I can’t do it, but God CAN!

Was blessed to find a copy of “Captivating” for 50 cents at the local thrift store near my college campus. What a god-send! I had been seriously struggling with feelings of unworthiness after an abusive relationship had finally come to an end. Such a profound healing took place in my heart as wept, smiled and began this new journey with Stasi. I have never felt more beautiful than while reading this book and discovering God’s heartbeat for me. SO looking forward to this next book.
What a gift Stasi is to the Body of Christ and, particularly, to women! I had the privilege of leading worship for a conference earlier this year at which she was the speaker, and it was THE most profound message I have heard in decades. And it was based on this new book, prior to its release! I would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE a copy of this to further solidify the truths that hit me so deeply during the conference.

One of the thing God has blessed me with is discernment. This gifting comes in so many ways. From understanding someone on a deeper level, to knowing when something is wrong, and to be able to read situations and people. This has been very helpful to me and I thank God for it!!! I used to think the ways that I thought and what I understood was how “everyone” processed information but indeed it was a gift. I often wonder how many other things myself or others think is normal for everyone but is really a unique gift to them.

Years ago, I had a friend that was a Parrish Nurse. She saw something in my struggle with romance and gifted me a copy of “Captivating.” At the time, I wasn’t sure about it. It took me a bit to read it and the lessons were profound, but my heart wasn’t fully ready quite yet. A few years later I picked it up again. My heart was ready at last for the message and lessons.
Since then, I have read “Wild At Heart”, “Epic”, “Desire,” and many others. I also have audio downloads of the sessions that accompany some of the wonders of what John and Stasi offer on this side of Heaven. I use their voices to guide me as I workout or run. I was part of a Run for God program this year in which we combined Bible study with training for a 5K. The audio of John and Stasi kept me going farther than I ever imagined on the training sessions.
The most life transforming audio so far? “Hoping in the Coming Kingdom.” Revelations such as the odd nature of ‘bucket lists’ and how we shouldn’t lament those things we won’t experience in this form as Heaven will provide our dreams and destiny were SO powerful for me! And those visualizations and insights into how our moments of awe and wonder are mere glimpses into the Kingdom itself! Wow! I always knew there was a bittersweet mix of emotion surrounding the desire to hold onto those moments, to relive them in some way. I think this is why we often try to capture them on film…we want to share them, relive them, and be immersed in that very wonder!

The Eldredge’s books are always like tall, cool glasses of water for the parched places in my and my husband’s lives and struggles. What a blessing John and Staci are to us and to so many others!
I love what I’ve heard of this book by Stasi, and would love to have the opportunity to own a copy.
God has given me a gift of creativity. Right now that is focused primarily in the area of jewellery making, as I have a business in that area. I am being challenged, and priviledged, to stay in His calling for my life, even when “in the natural” (which is where we are not supposed to be focused), it’s difficult. He’s so faithful in every area though.

This is exactly what my heart has been dealing with as a woman who is a working at home mom! Afraid of dreaming again or even the concept of dreams in a practical daily life.
Reading captivating was a real turning point in my walk with Jesus and for starting the healing process from my past. Of the many gifts the Lord has blessed me with one that is important is that my past experiences have enabled me to to show real empathy to so many people I meet through my line of work and I can identify with their pain. Being able to show such understanding to people is a real gift to them and helps them to know that they aren’t alone. Healing through Jesus is the key and I lovebeing able to share with others how he has healed my heart!! Cannot wait to read the new book!

It took me a really long time to realize that God had not screwed up making me; that He had a purpose in creating the unique person I am, and that He could even use my personality, quirks and style in the Body. What a load off! Not only can I be myself; but that’s all God expects from me. I love Stasi’s ministry and would love to read her revelation of God’s love and acceptance.
