One of the great things we can expect of God is the unexpected. By His nature, God’s ways are so much more vibrant, breathtaking, and all-encompassing than our own. This is one of the most exciting aspects of living with divine expectation: we can lean into the idea that whatever God has up His sleeve is better than anything we could imagine on our own. I’ve seen this time and time again throughout life. I planned to go to one school. I ended up at another. I selected one major. I ended up with another. I thought I would in one area of the country. I ended up living another. In each of these cases and many more, the outcome was greater than anything I could have anticipated.
But this isn’t just true of you big picture life decisions, but those small every day ones.
Caught in traffic.
Running into someone unexpected at the grocery store.
A long lost friend asks to be your friend on Facebook.
An extra project gets added to your work load.
The neighbor seems extra chatty today.
What if it’s in these moments—which you didn’t expect—God is busting at the seams to display His glory and power and might in your life? [Tweet this.]
What if what could be dismissed as a detour or inconvenience or chance is actually an invitation to experience the wonder of God?
Spend some time asking God to raise the level of divine expectation in your life and expect the unexpected. Ask God to place people in your life today on whom you can lavish the love of God.

Loved the book Wonderstruck. Looking forward to what God has for me today.
Still trying to get through a few more books I committed to review. Can’t wait to start on wonders truck.
Wow…This blog post sums up what my thoughts were right before getting on here.
I have found myself(as stupid as it sounds) setting God up for Wonderstruck moments. Like praying for wonder this morning right before I went out to photograph a beautiful sunset. I think, “This would be the PERFECT time for God to wonderstrike me!” And I expect it and wait for it…But it doesn’t happen. Then, at the most unexpected time, when I’m not even thinking about it, I’m wonderstruck. Just proves that God loves to surprise me and wants me to “expect the unexpected!”
Hope that made sence!
Wanda, so thrilled you enjoyed Wonderstruck!
Margaret, can’t wait to hear what you think of Wonderstruck!
Chelsea, I get what you’re saying… Amazing to see the times that he reveals himself to us through his Wonder!
I love surprises! Especially from God. I can’t imagine living the life I planned knowing that what He has planned far exceeds anything I can imagine. Now if I can just remember to avoid frustration in the little things when my day doesn’t go my way…
Margaret,
I am not a slow reader – but I find that I don’t want to finish your book so I am consuming each chapter slowly – underlining and let your words and God’s Word sink into my soul. I love how you teach His Word.
Thanks so much for helping me to #livewonderstruck
He has shown up already this morning :). Isn’t HE amazing! Thank you for sharing your heart and your encouragement Margaret! LOVED “Wonderstruck” … mailing it to my Mom for whom you prayed a few months back and she is eager to read it! It is a Miracle she is alive and I can’t wait to see what the Lord will do as she reads your book “Wonderstruck”! I KNOW for sure He is about doing something really sweet as He reveals Himself more and more to my 84 year old Momma! 🙂 Also, taking it to give to my Sister/friend/Chiropracter/Pilates instructor/Power plate instructor this morning! Wanted to bless her in some way and giving her “Wonderstruck” is the perfect fit as she is leaving for a South African Safari! Am sure she will be wonderstruck there!
Blessings my Sister!
I love this thought–of expecting God in all the unexpected things that happen. Too often I don’t look at things that way. I look at them as interruptions or intrusions. Thank you for reminding me to look for God in the everyday.
Margaret, my One Word this year is “inconvenience” and this is exactly what I mean by that. God has a way of blowing us a way even in the midst of routine. I want the eyes and the heart to see it! And the courage to act on those moments.
Kimberly, praying for patience and grace for you today!
Janis, love it! So glad you are enjoying it!
Kathleen, so thrilled you enjoyed Wonderstruck! And can’t wait to hear what your Mom thinks.
Sharla, so glad it resonated with you!
Eileen, love this! Praying for courage for you today!
