A while back, I decided to go on a scriptural journey to discover God like I had never known Him before.
I purchased a notebook, and went through the entire New Testament and key books of the Old Testament writing down every verse that revealed something about God. As you can imagine, there were quite a few. It wasn’t too long until I began categorizing them. I began studying the names and nicknames of God. His likes and dislikes. Those places in Scripture where he is so readily apparent and others where it seems to be withdrawn.
Some of you know that became the basis for my book, The Organic God and corresponding six-session DVD Bible study.
Something interesting happened during my personal time of studying the scriptures. In addition to discovering characteristics about God that I had never really noticed before-his bigheartedness, his kindness, his beauty and his mystery-I also noticed something else. Namely, that whenever God’s name was mentioned there was almost always a verb nearby. As I began to study this in scripture, I began to see just how active and engaged God is in our lives, our communities and our world. I began to discover what I now call the Verbs of God.
I don’t know about you, but I know that in my own life, all too often, I am tempted to ask the question – Where is God? I look at around at the pain, loss and hurt in our world and even in my own life and can’t help but wonder, God don’t you see this? Can’t you do something about this? Where are you?
In those moments, the Verbs of God remind me that God is ever-active and ever-engaged. Even when I can’t see him or feel him, God is constantly on the move. The Verbs of God remind me that no matter what my emotions or mind or circumstances may try to tell me, the truth is that God is not only present, but he has movement. God is not a spectator to everything going on in our world. He is actively engaged. He is fully alive. And He is always involved. That’s why I explore some of the verbs of God-the attributes of God in motion-and we’re reminded that God is truly more present that we every imagined in Verbs of God: 4-Session DVD Bible Study.
