What if the End of the World Doesn't Come Tomorrow?

In Matthew 24:26, Jesus says that no one knows the day or the hour that the world will end. But Harold Camping thinks otherwise.

Camping’s nonprofit Christian organization, Family Radio, raked in $80 million in contributions between 2005 and 2009. But he’s become headline news fodder for his prediction of a massive earthquake that will hit tomorrow, May 21, on “Judgment Day” issuing in the second coming of Christ. Like many cities around the United States, he’s advertising “Judgment Day” on billboards in Denver–including a street we regularly drive down.

When I first saw the billboard for “Judgment Day”, I thought it was a fluke, a one-off sponsored advertisement by a religious fanatic. Now I realize the billboard is part of a larger national media campaign. The whole initiative is bothersome on several levels.

1. Camping has inaccurately predicted the end of the world before, namely, in 1994. I’m not sure why anyone would believe his prediction would be any more accurate this time around.

2. Camping’s own employees aren’t convinced of the prediction. CNN Money reports that an estimate 80% of Family Radio’s employees don’t believe that tomorrow will mark the end of the world. That’s why they’re booking appointments, scheduling events, and planning to come to work on Monday.

3. Camping has issued a Farewell Letter which isn’t a bad idea for a 90-year-old, but in the context of his media campaign, it brings to remembrance cults of the past that didn’t end well.

But what if Camping is right? What if God spoke to Harold Camping and tomorrow really is Judgment Day? Yeah! Point for Harold.

But the better question is what if Camping is wrong? What if the end of the world doesn’t come tomorrow? (Or today, as may be in New Zealand).

That’s where the damage is done–again, by someone who probably means well, but has been swept up in apocalyptic nonsense that leaves people looking wide-eyed at a distorted view of Christianity and the Scripture.

    While I do look forward to going home and do often wish and pray Jesus would come soon, I also recognize that our job here is not complete until God says so.

    I doubt that May 21, 2011 is circled in red on some celestial calendar as some would want us to believe. Jesus will return when Jesus will return.

    In the meantime, lets just keep on keeping on. Let us continue on in our work of expanding the kingdom until the King really does return.

    I, too, find it somewhat sad that anyone would get caught up in this and believe it. Whenever I hear something like this, I immediately think “Don’t these so-called Christian authorities read their Bibles? It says right in there that NOBODY knows when the world will end.” Which means, in my way of looking at it anyway, these “authorities” cannot believe that the Word of God is all truth….and that is disurbing.
    All we can do is pray….which is more than enough!

    I am frustrated with manner in which church leaders have remained relatively quiet on this issue. Clearly, the scripture is quite clear about the fact that, yes, Jesus is coming back, however we do not have the power, or the authority, to say WHEN. Especially when Jesus himself said that only the Father knew, when the disciples asked him.

    I am curious at how the general populace seem overly concerned with the end of the world, when Jesus actually wanted people to focus on TODAY with eyes and hearts of faith of a wonderful future.

    So as I read this and also saw the billboards around my Dallas community I too wondered about this….. Who pays for the billboard on the 22nd? And if this guy owes anyone money I might collect today. I’m also thinking if I was one of his employees I would seriously check the status of my 401k

    People remain so “human in the flesh” (God love ’em) and continue to look for something supernatural in which to put their trust. We must tell them they can find ALL they will ever need to satisfy their souls in Jesus!

    Is Mr. Camping God? My bible tells me that He is the only one who knows when the time will be, not even the angels know!

    As I taught my children about repeating gossip…”If you are not an eye-witness, you are a false-witness.” Mr. Camping’s teaching cannot be backed up with bible scripture, therefore how can it be true?

    I agree with Heather! Why in the world hasn’t our Christian forum stepped up to the plate to renounce this hype?
