A Royal Wedding: Shane Claiborne and Katie Jo Brotherton

This weekend Leif and I had the privilege of attending the royal wedding, no, not that royal wedding, but a truly royal event of matrimony between Shane Claiborne and Katie Jo Brotherton.

If somehow you’ve missed discovering Shane’s work, I’d highly recommend The Irresistible Revolution and Common Prayer. Not only is Claiborne a gifted writer and speaker on issues of social justice, peacemaking, and Jesus, but he’s an inspiring leader who lives what he believes in his community known as The Simple Way.

Shane and Katie Jo’s wedding sparked my imagination about what the true royal wedding, the one held at the end of the age, will be like. A wedding filled with people of all ages, socioeconomic status, and race. A wedding where english isn’t the only language spoken. A wedding where children squeal, and those who haven’t darkened the door of a church in forever gather to celebrate. A wedding where the music played is as diverse as the performers. A wedding where the cry for justice is not only heralded but heard. A wedding where laughter flows freely. A wedding where we’re honest about our misgivings and forgivings.  A wedding where everyone is welcome, literally everyone, from the neighborhood. A wedding where beauty is found in the details, like an engagement ring made from a diamond found and saved from childhood. A wedding where the clothes are tailored with countless hours of love.

Yes, this wedding, possibly more than any other, placed a smile in my heart for the wedding that we will all celebrate together one day. Thanks Shane and Katie Jo. And congratulations! We love you!
