Let’s check in with a little quiz. Don’t worry. You won’t be graded and you don’t have to publish your responses on Facebook.
Place a mental check by the following that are true for you:
____ I can sleep for 8 hours and still wake up tired.
____ It has been too long since my last vacation.
____ My schedule is jam-packed.
____ My job, relationships, or marriage are suffering because of my schedule.
____ I wake up overwhelmed by all I need to do during the upcoming day.
____ I regularly say “yes”, then regret what I’ve committed to.
____ I become agitated by little annoyances.
____ My time with God feels rushed.
____ I often hear myself saying: “I don’t have time.”
____ I haven’t enjoyed quality time with my closest friends in more than a month.
____ Reading a book, taking a catnap, or hopping in a bubble bath is a luxury I can’t afford right now.
Count how many you placed checks by.
If you checked between 0 and 3, you are among of the Rested Ones.
What’s your secret? You have learned how to embrace the gift of rest in your life—something to be celebrated!
If you checked between 4 and 7, you are on the Busy Bubble.
Careful—it might pop! You juggle a busy life with the awareness that you need downtime.
If you checked between 8 and 11, you are a Swamped Sleepyhead.
Friend, break time is calling you. Your life is sprinting at high-speed—on the highest incline. Burn-out and stress-out await you. Perhaps now is the time reevaluate.
In a recent season of life I found myself dog-tired and burnt-out. My schedule bounced from meetings to conference calls, juggling deadlines, and out-of-town guests. I was running late or hurrying to get somewhere every day. My relationships suffered. My productivity declined. My time in prayer dwindled. I didn’t have energy for any of the life-giving things I once savored.
I was exhausted, and every facet of my life reared the rotten fruits of that exhaustion. Something had to change. I needed to rediscover the wonder of rest in my life.
And maybe you do, too.
Do you feel like you’re on a smoking treadmill at full incline? Freedom isn’t found in tossing the treadmill, but in finding a maintainable pace.
Together, let’s discover the wonder of rest this week. We will learn to say no, where to cut back, and how to drink in God’s gift of rest in our daily lives.
You’re invited to enter God’s rest starting today. Crawl into bed knowing the world lounges safely in the palms of God.
