Two Words You Don't Want To Hear Today

Last week, I told you about the prayer that changed my life.

“God, astound me with your wonder. I want to know you as wonderful.”

Through this bold prayer, God met us in the most unexpected ways and revealed to us a little bit more about one of his greatest wonders of all—the wonder of himself.

We began to see God as a God full of wonder. A God whose presence and work takes our breath away, leaving us in awe and astonishment of who he is.

And maybe, in order to experience the wonder of God’s presence you need to remember these two dreaded words today:

s.l.o.w.

d.o.w.n.

Last week at MargaretFeinberg.com, we discussed our wonder robbers—the things that pull us away from seeing and savoring the wonder of God in our lives. Your answers echoed many in my own life:

A laundry-list of to-dos.

Needy kiddos.

A cramped work schedule.

Barely enough time for a shower, let alone spending time with your husband, your kids, or God.

Being a caregiver to your aging parents.

The stress of making ends meet.

Juggling multiple jobs.

A diagnosis, loss, trauma that has taken all of your attention.

And maybe, like me, the last two words you want to hear are:

s.l.o.w.

d.o.w.n.

I’ve found that God often chooses to reveal the wonder of his presence in quiet moments.

So today, will you create a space for silence?

For some of you, this may take an act of bravery to carve out just five minutes of silence to quiet your mind, emotions, and soul just to be with God. No words exchanged.

My sweet friend and longtime prayer-warrior, Judy, continues to practice silence daily. She has to set a timer and is proud to be up to seven whole minutes of complete silence with God.

I’m lucky if I can get two without interruptions or distractions.

Maybe for you that time of silence can only happen in the shower. Maybe you can squeeze it in while stuck in traffic. Maybe you need to set your alarm five minutes earlier. For me, I have to get out of my surroundings (squirrel!) and go for a walk around my neighborhood to spend time in silence with God.

When we carve out time to enjoy God’s presence in silence, we press the reset button in our minds and hearts to be more receptive to the wonders of God all around us.
