“Jesus encourages the disciples to resist flashy, monotonous prayers whose only purpose was to win God’s favor, wear down God’s resolve, or appear spiritual to others. Jesus introduces prayer as the acknowledgement that God, our Abba Father, already knows everything and waits for us to call on him. God sits enthroned ready to listen, to help.”

Jesus Calling

Jesus Calling

After many years of writing in her prayer journal, missionary Sarah Young decided to listen to God with pen in hand, writing down whatever she believed He was saying to her. She knew her writings were not inspired as Scripture is, but journaling helped her grow closer to God.  Others were blessed as she shared her writings, until people all over the world were using her messages. They are written from Jesus’ point of view, thus the title Jesus Calling. This is a good devotional for anyone looking for a good read.

If Thou Could Empty all Thyself of Self

If thou could empty all thyself of self,
Like to a shell dishabited,
Then might He find thee on the ocean shelf,
And say, ‘This is not dead’,
And fill thee with Himself instead.

But thou art all replete with very thou
And hast such shrewd activity,
That when He comes, He says, ‘This is enough
Unto itself – ’twere better let it be,
It is so small and full, there is no room for me.”

Sir Thomas Browne, poem’s author
