The Secret Formula to Find Fulfillment Today

Fulfill is the characteristic verb in Matthew’s Gospel.

All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”). –Matthew 1:22-23

The NIV uses the verb to fulfill—but I like Eugene Peterson’s version better: This would bring the prophet’s embryonic sermon to full term.

To fulfill. To make full. To fill to the fullness. To fully preach. To execute. To perfect.

The Old Testament passages Matthew cites have dual meanings. An immediate fulfillment in the time it was written and a completion in the future.

Jesus’ life and ministry brings the prophesies to full term.

But this isn’t the only the fulfillment Jesus brought with Him. Look what He says:

Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly I tell you, until heaven and earth disappear, not the smallest letter, not the least stroke of a pen, will by any means disappear from the Law until everything is accomplished. –Matthew 5:17-18

And not only that! Consider the following:

This was to fulfill what was spoken through the prophet Isaiah:

“Here is my servant whom I have chosen,
the one I love, in whom I delight;
I will put my Spirit on him,
and he will proclaim justice to the nations.
He will not quarrel or cry out;
no one will hear his voice in the streets.
A bruised reed he will not break,
and a smoldering wick he will not snuff out,
till he has brought justice through to victory.
    In his name the nations will put their hope.” –Matthew 12:17-21

It raises this question:

Where are you looking for your fulfillment?

A job.

A relationship.

A title.

A salary level.

A role.

Or in Jesus, the one who fills up our lives with his goodness and righteousness. Who overflows our hearts with love. Who extends grace toward our imperfections. Who fulfills our every need.

    I desire mercy, not sacrifice. Stuck in my head and in my heart…asking Him to reveal more to me.
